Who are some of the oldest models in the world?

Older female models have never been as much in demand as they do now. Baby boomers have all the money as consumers, so we are entering an era where brands are targeting them.

Let’s take a look at who the oldest models in the world are.

Carmen Dell’Orefice, age 89

Dell’Orefice retired from modeling for some time but returned to the industry because of how the demand for mature female models has grown. She started modeling at 13 already, but it took a while for her career to take off. In October 1947 she appeared on the cover of Vogue at the age of 16, making her the youngest Vogue cover model ever.

Dell’Orefice is the eldest supermodel in the world currently if the more traditional meaning of the word is applied. Since her return to modeling, she has modeled for Stéphane Rolland, Thierry Mugler, Anna Sui, and Guo Pei, among others.

Daphne Selfe, age 92

Selfe has been in the industry since 1949 and is the second oldest model in the world. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she is the most senior, but our next spot on the list is worth mentioning.

Daphne Selfe did take a break from modeling but returned in 1998 when she was asked by the fashion label Red or Dead to walk in their show at London Fashion Week. Since then, Selfe has worked for DKNY, Olay, D&G, Evian, Nivea and H&M, and other brands. She is probably the most successful mature female model.

She is 5.5 feet tall, which is typically too short for the runway. Female models are required to be at least 5.9 feet tall for runway work, but taller is better.

Majorie Gilbert, age 101

Marjorie ‘Bo’ Gilbert was at 100 years of age when she was featured in British Vogue. As far as we know that was the only time she modeled as well, but the record still stands as the oldest model ever.

Bo said even though she had no modeling experience she always loved fashion. The publishing of her photo in Vogue was a step in the right direction for empowering older female models.

Older models are still rocking it in the world of fashion and are an inspiration to all people who want to model. Let’s hope this trend continues. We need to have more models of all ages featured in this modern world.
